Why is the topic of female masturbation such a taboo in today’s society – when it’s deemed OK for men?

Why is it so unacceptable for women to pleasure themselves? Why is it so taboo to talk about female masturbation?

For years masturbation was vilified: you’ll grow hair on your palms, you’ll become infertile, you’ll become incontinent, you’ll lose your mind, you’ll go blind. These myths about masturbation fostered shame and embarrassment about self-pleasuring, sex and sexuality. Yet, in 2011, nobody will be surprised to hear that men enjoy themselves privately but the subject of women doing the same has been isolated to porn and a nymphomaniac-assumption… “Only women who are sexually promiscuous or women who are sex addicts or women who are loose masturbate.”

These conclusions are hardly shocking. It was only in the 1980s that Doctor’s uniformly agreed that the clitoris (the pleasure center of the vagina) even existed. Even today, some people swear that the female orgasm is a myth. (Despite massive medical evidence to the contrary.)

So we all tip-toe around the subject. Maybe talking about it with our closest girl friends or talking about it hypothetically: even those of us who think masturbation is acceptable rarely announce I MASTURBATE to the world. That’s “uncomfortable, awkward, too much information.” But is it?…

How many young girls think that, that part of their body is dirty? That masturbating is for boys or masturbating is somehow an indication of low morals? That vaginas are something to be ashamed of or that girls aren’t allowed to express their sexuality? I think the answer to these questions is TOO MANY. Way too many. And by not talking about masturbation openly and honestly, we empower the vagina nay-sayers of the world who shame us for our sexuality.
Well, enough is enough.

I’m a proud, sexy, feisty, sassy, sensual woman, And today, right here, right now, for all you staying alive-ers, I make this not-so-shocking, not so-extra-ordinary confession: I touch myself, I pleasure myself, I enjoy myself and god dammit, I’m THE best lover I’ve ever had!!

Life is too short to be silent and the fact that I love and enjoy myself is NOT inappropriate. If we tell the truth and tell it loud then it stops being such a dirty secret!
